Storytelling in B2B Marketing Videos

Video content is essential to reach savvy audiences in the world of B2B marketing, and storytelling is the key vehicle for delivering your message. Unfortunately, many companies still use the outdated term “corporate video” instead of the more fitting “video content” or “marketing video.”
One of the most common questions I’m asked is: “How do we create an engaging video that’s watched to the very end?” This is often followed by: “How long should it be?” and, of course: “How much will it cost?”
When I’m researching B2B services, I may watch several videos in the process. Unless it’s a cute cat video, I want the “reward” as quickly as possible. The earlier I am in the shopping process (or sales funnel), the shorter my attention span. At this stage, I’m looking for the problem and the solution—details tend to get in the way. I’m consuming material quickly because I’m still in the research phase.
The videos I watch to the end are invariably those that tell a good story, and they do so quickly. Like most people, I’m a sucker for a compelling narrative. A strong story can be told in seconds, a minute, or longer if it’s engaging enough. Personally, I’ll watch for up to a minute or two before expecting a clear “payout.”
If you want to keep your audience engaged with potentially “drier” content, storytelling is a critical component. It profoundly impacts how viewers connect with and remember your message. Here’s why storytelling is crucial for B2B marketing videos:
- Engagement: Captures and sustains audience attention.
- Memorability: Makes content more memorable.
- Connection: Establishes an emotional bond with viewers.
- Simplicity: Breaks down complex concepts into digestible pieces.
- Humanization: Puts faces to the brand, making it more relatable.
- Conflict & Resolution: Highlights challenges and solutions.
- Brand Identity: Reinforces your company’s values and culture.
- Differentiation: Sets your company apart from competitors.
- Call to Action: Encourages the audience to take desired actions.
- Shareability: Increases the potential reach of your video.
Storytelling in B2B marketing videos is a strategic tool for conveying information, building relationships, and achieving marketing goals. It creates a memorable, relatable, and emotionally resonant experience for your audience
